Use of abortion pill RU486 approved by “Santé Canada”

Publié le 29 Jul, 2015

On Monday, “Santé Canada”, Canada’s Federal Ministry for Health approved the use of abortion pill RU486[1], “based on scientific recommendations”. It will be marketed under the name of Mifegymiso, by the LinePharma International Limited laboratory.

The President of the National Abortion Federation, Vicki Saporta, is delighted with this decision which has taken two and a half years from when the manufacturer first submitted the marketing authorisation application. According to Ms. Saporta, this is “the safest and most efficient way of terminating a pregnancy”.

Associations such as the Campaign Life Coalition are, however, “campaigning against RU486 – a dangerous pill that can cause psychological trauma”.

Health Minister, Roma Ambrose, could oppose this decision “as she did when Santé Canada approved the prescription of heroin to treat people suffering from drug dependency”.

[1] Developed and marketed in France since 1988.
