USA: second baby born after a uterus transplant

Publié le 19 Mar, 2018

This American woman was born with the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH), i.e. without a uterus. She lived “convinced she would never be able to get pregnant or have a baby”. However, she has just given birth to a baby girl at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, following a uterus transplant.

The first baby following such an operation was born in Sweden in 2014 [1]. In the United States, a baby was born in Dallas in 2017, also to a mother affected with the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome.

The hospital did not reveal “the mother’s identity, but asserted that the pregnancy and delivery went smoothly”.

[1] The uterus transplant was conducted by the gynaecologist and transplant specialist Liza Johannesson.
