UK: The Health Minister speaks out against abortion for minor handicaps

Publié le : 16 April 2014

In the United Kingdom, Health Minister Jane Ellison has declared that minor handicaps such as a club foot or cleft palate do not justify an abortion. She added that Parliament had not given a precise definition for a "serious handicap" in the abortion law, which led to the abortion of babies with minor handicaps after the legal limit of 24 weeks.

Jane Ellison went on to say that the government is currently reflecting on the matter and would issue new directives intended to specify the way in which the abortion law should be interpreted, as this is not always applied in the same way.
