UK – Jeremy Hunt: gender-selective abortion – an illegal practice

Publié le : 23 May 2014

In Great Britain, the Secretary of State for Health intends to issue new instructions to show doctors that gender-selective abortion is an "unacceptable and illegal" practice.

These new guidelines indicate that selective abortions coupled with forms completed by doctors in advance to authorise abortions – currently common practice in Great Britain – are in violation of the law. According to the 1967 Abortion Act, abortion is authorised only if two doctors consider that the physical or mental health of the child or pregnant woman is at risk. Furthermore, doctors must declare that they are acting “in accordance with the law” when they give their authorisation.
