Turkey: the government backs off from challenging the right to abortion

Publié le 21 Juin, 2012

Thursday 21 June 2012, the Turkish government "is backtracking regarding its intentions to challenge the right to abortion which triggered a controversy in Turkey."
Nevertheless, last month, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan "initiated a controversy when he compared […] abortion to murder’." Subsequently he announced his will to "revise the abortion law." However, "feminist organizations and family planning organisms have criticized Mr. Erdogan’s point of view". According to "an influential member of the governmental party, Hüseyin Canikli", it looks very unlikely that a "project aimed at restricting abortion is about to be announced".
But on Thursday 21 June 2012 "the Health Minister Recep Akdag told […], the press that a report prepared by several ministers concerning abortion and its legal framework would be submitted to the Council of Ministers the following week".
