A child was born on 5 January 2017 in Ukraine following three-parent IVF. This is the second birth involving genetic handling procedures following the birth of a little boy in Mexico in April 2016.
The Nadiya Clinic in Kiev, which practised IVF, used the technique to combat a couple’s infertility not to avoid a mitochondrial disease. A second birth is expected in early March.
The technique is controversial and fuels ethical debates. Numerous scientists warn essentially of the fact that three-parent IVF is “experimental” and that it has not been “correctly evaluated or scientifically proven”.
