The United Nations call on Ireland to hold a referendum on abortion

Publié le 22 Jun, 2015

In a report broaching numerous problems, the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has asked the Irish Government, amongst others, “to take all of the necessary measures” – including a referendum – to review its law on abortion.

This report expresses the UN’s concerns about the criminalisation of abortion in Ireland where the procedure is legally considered to be a crime even if this option is chosen following rape or incest and in cases where the pregnancy jeopardises the mother’s life.

According to Niall Behan, Director of the Irish Family Planning Association, “The force and clarity of the report written by the United Nations Committee leaves absolutely no doubt that a realistic response is needed to promote access to abortion in Ireland”.
