After the Maltese government proposed the nomination of Tonio Borg for the post of European Health Commissioner, to replace John Dalli, a majority of the political groups represented in the European Parliament gave their approval to this nomination. The next stage is set for next Thursday when the European Parliament in Strasbourg will be asked to formally approve the nomination of Mr Borg at its next plenary session.

The article points out that "in a letter sent to the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schultz, the German conservative EMP Klaus-Heiner Lehne, President of the Conference of Presidents of Parliamentary Committees, stated that Mr Borg, auditioned on Tuesday by the Parliament, was viewed ‘generally in a positive manner’ by the relevant committees" and that "the Parliament paid tribute to ‘the competence, European commitment and independence’ of the aspiring Commissioner."
