The Dutch NGO “Women on Waves” is repeating its “abortion ship” strategy, heading for Guatemala on this occasion. Abortion is authorised in Guatemala if the mother’s life is in jeopardy. The NGO wants to offer “free services to women wishing to terminate an unwanted pregnancy” by circumventing local legislation. The ship will dock for a few days before rejoining international waters where organisers will supply abortion pills believed to be “effective and harmless”. As the process will take place in international waters, they do not believe that “Guatemalan legislation is being violated”.
