The first uterus transplantation seminar will be held in Sweden, in February 2014, at Gothenburg University. It will be co-ordinated by Professor Mats Brannstrom, who successfully carried out the world’s first uterus transplants. Only two such procedures have been performed and neither has resulted in a birth to date. The Bioedge website providing the information stresses that this kind of transplant raises certain ethical issues. In fact, the risk to the donor is greater than that to the recipient. Furthermore, the babies will have to be conceived by in-vitro fertilisation, at least to start with. Finally, the mother must take immunosuppressants.
