Quebec: euthanasia – voting in mid-June despite a wave of protest?

Publié le : 5 June 2014

Draft bill 52 on “end-of-life care“, presented by Véronique Hivon, Minister of Social Services and Protection of the Young on 12 June 2013, has received lively criticism (Gènéthique press review on October 14th, 2014). In fact, it refers to the legalisation of euthanasia in the State of Quebec. It could be adopted “before the end of the Parliamentary session, on 13 June 2014”.

There is no consensus with regard to bill 52. Recently criticised by Ottawa (Gènéthique press review on May 26th, 2014), it is also receiving criticism from the public and the medical profession alike. Thus, the association Vivre Dans la Dignité (Living with Dignity) in partnership with the Collectif des Médecins contre l’euthanasie (Doctors against Euthanasia), has published a calling on MPs to intervene. This video includes in particular Dr. Beauchamp, surgeon and president of the Living With Dignity association, Jean Vanier, founder of l’Arche, and Dr. Geneviève Dechêne, physician specialising in home-based palliative care.
