Ohio: ACLU contests the ban on abortion based on prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome

Publié le 1 Mar, 2018

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has taken legal action against the Ohio law adopted last December, which bans the abortion of foetuses diagnosed with Down syndrome (see OhAio: Law banning the abortion of foetuses with Down syndrome has finally been adopted). According to the ACLU, this law violates the freedom and private life clause in the Fourteenth Amendment of the US Constitution. It claims that this is an attempt to “criminalise abortion” in Ohio whereas Ohio Right to Life views such abortions as “discriminatory”. The complaint was filed in an attempt to delay the bill coming into force, which is currently scheduled for 23 March 2018.
