Norway : selective abortion open to foreigners carrying twins

Publié le 3 Nov, 2016

In Sweden and Denmark – neighbouring countries to Norway – selective abortion is not permitted. However Swedish and Danish women pregnant with twins can now travel to Norway to abort one of the foetuses. In fact, the Norwegian Health Ministry has ruled to legalise abortion for foreign women carrying twins. They can exercise this right in Norwegian hospitals even if the foetus is healthy. Several women have already contacted the said establishments to set the procedure in motion.

Hospitals in Norway are not obliged to ask for a fixed address – this decision could therefore lead to an increase in “abortion tourism” although foreign women will still have to pay for the procedure.
