Northern Ireland refuses to relax the abortion law

Publié le 10 Feb, 2016

Yesterday evening, the Northern Ireland Assembly finally rejected the amendment to extend abortion to foetuses with serious diseases and a restricted quality of life.

With 59 in favour and 40 against, Assembly members maintained their restrictive abortion legislation voting against abortion in the event of rape and fœtal deformities. This decision was upheld despite last November’s ruling by the Belfast High Court which claimed that this legislation violated women’s rights.
