Kansas bans abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy

Publié le 7 Avr, 2015

Yesterday, Tuesday 7 April, Republican Governor, Sam Brownback, signed a bill prohibiting abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy, making Kansas the first State to adopt this type of approach.

This law, which will take effect on 1 July, makes the “dilatation-extraction” process illegal.  According to legislation, this is viewed as a process that “mutilates” the foetus. The law provides for certain exceptions to the rule in cases where abortion could save the pregnant woman’s life or if pregnancy proves life-threatening for the mother.

Kansas is the first State in the United States of America to prevent second trimester abortions. Similar laws are being considered in Oklahoma, Missouri and South Carolina.

In the United States, 90% of abortions are carried out during the first trimester.
