Italy: first ovule donor pregnancy after lifting the ban on infertility treatments

Publié le 23 Juil, 2014

Last April, the Italian Constitutional Court deemed that the ban on in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) involving a third donor was contrary to the Constitution (Gènéthique press review on April 7th, 2014). Therefore, in June, the more general ban on infertility treatments was lifted. A few weeks later, the first ovule donation pregnancy was announced in Italy, explains Filomena Gallo, Secretary of the Luca Coscioni Association – an association that campaigns for the freedom of scientific research. She added that this first pregnancy was the outcome of a ten year fight in Italy to lift the ban on sperm and ovule donation. This association also campaigns for unfertilised embryos to be used for research purposes.
