According to the Israeli National Institute for Health Policy Research, 75% of Israelis requesting pre-implantation genetic diagnosis do so in order to ensure that they have a son instead of a daughter. Amongst the Arab Israeli population, 100% of PGD requests are made to guarantee a male foetus.
Initially, in Israel, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis was reserved for parents likely to transmit a gender-related genetic disease. But in 2005, this option was made available to parents who had at least four children of the same sex. Requests are assessed by a Committee who then decides whether or not couples can access this procedure.
