Ireland : over 5,600 women have sought “illegal” medical abortion

Publié le 2 Nov, 2016

The Women on Web Association gives Irish women access to medical abortion which is illegal in their country.According to a study published in the “British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology“, over 5,600 women have already taken up this option (see IVG :Une proposition de loirejetée en Irlande – abortion – a draft bill rejected in Ireland).

In addition to access to medical abortion via mail-order pills (mifepristone – RU 486 – and misoprostol), the association also offers on-line consultations.

Most of these Irish women who already have children (63%) and are between 20 and 30 years of age(85%), stated that they initially considered travelling to the United Kingdom – a neighbouring country where abortion is legal – to terminate their pregnancies. However, since the trip would prove costly for some, they turned to Women on Web, even if it means bypassing the law (see L’Irlande du Nord sommée de libéralisersaloi sur l’IVG – Northern Ireland summoned to deregulate its abortion law).
