Ireland: abortion legislation contested before the UN

Publié le : 15 November 2013

Amanda Mellet, a 38 year-old Irish woman whose foetus had a fatal heart defect has asked the United Nations Human Rights’ Committee to rule against the legislation currently in force in Ireland. Since July 2013, abortion has been authorised in Ireland in cases where the mother’s life is at risk (Gènéthique press review on July 29th, 2013).

Ms. Mellet hopes to "increase international pressure on Dublin and thus extend the right to abortion" in the event of foetal anomalies.
