In the US state of Iowa, the legislature has just adopted a more restrictive abortion law—the most restrictive in the country. As soon as Governor Kim Reynolds signs the law, abortion in Iowa will be banned “as soon as a foetal heartbeat is detected”, i.e. around the sixth week of pregnancy. The only exceptions are cases of rape or incest.
While the ACLU[1] fears that the law will take “Iowa women back nearly a half century”, local Republican representative, Shannon Lundgren, welcomes the decision: “Today, we are taking a brave step… telling the nation that Iowa will defend its most vulnerable—those without a voice, our unborn children”.
