India: first birth following uterine transplant

Publié le 12 Nov, 2018

In India, a baby girl was born in mid-October 2018 following uterine transplant surgery performed on her mother in May 2017 (see India: two women given uterine transplants). A Caesarean section was performed full-term. The transplanted uterus was donated by the child’s grandmother.

So far, twelve babies have been born worldwide using this technique. The first child was born in Sweden in 2014. This birth is the first of its kind in India.

Note from Gènéthique: Uterine transplants pose the same ethical problems as surrogacy
