In Belgium, substantial increase in requests for official gender reassignment

Publié le 17 Dec, 2018

In 2018, 1,625 requests for official gender reassignment were registered in Belgium, i.e. 1/3 of register entries over the last 25 years.

42% concern individuals under 25 years of age. 71% of these are young Flemish transgender males.

This phenomenon follows new legislation relating to transsexuality, amending the law of 10 May 2007, which came into force on 1 January 2018. From now on, a simple administrative procedure with a registrar is all that it takes to record gender reassignment. There is no need for genital surgery or sterilisation.
