In Spain, a rich Lebanese mayor was arrested "on suspicion of having offered 40,000 € to poor immigrants to purchase part of their liver because he needed a transplant".
During a press conference, the National Police Commissioner made the following statement: "This is the first case we have identified". Welcoming this procedure against organ trafficking, the Director of the National Transplant Organisation (NTO), Rafael Matesanz, announced, "This is dangerous, a scourge of the 21st century[…]. No country is entirely blameless". Emphasising that in many parts of the world, organ traffickers "get off virtually scot-free", he stressed that this operation shows that "we have to remain alert".
