The controversial Korean scientist, Hwang Woo-Suk, has filed a patent on a line of human embryo stem cells called NT1 at the American Patent and Trademark Office. This patent does not represent “a scientific validation of his work”, but “a claim by Hwang that he has successfully extracted an embryo stem cell line from a cloned human embryo”.
Currently working as a scientist at the Soam Biotech Research Foundation and head of Hbion, a company specialising in animal cloning and cosmetics produced using stem cells, Hwang Woo-Suk taught at Seoul University before being convicted of falsifying his cloning studies in 2009.
