Germany: supply conditions for the morning after pill under debate

Publié le : 14 February 2014

Currently, in Germany, the morning-after pill can only be dispensed on presentation of a doctor’s prescription. This is a pre-requisite that should continue, according to the German Minister for Health, Hermann Gröe, member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU Party. In an interview published on Sunday, 9 February in the German newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, the Minister declared: "We need a thorough consultation. […] The best way of safeguarding that is to keep this medication a prescription-only drug".

The Minister for Health is adopting this stance at a time when the question of over-the-counter sales of the morning-after pill is set to be debated in the Bundestag – the lower house of the German Parliament, on Thursday, 13 February.
