In Germany, a man froze his sperm before undergoing a sex change in 2012. Three years later, his partner gave birth to a child by medically assisted procreation (MAP) using this sperm. The transsexual individual wanted to be recognised as the child’s mother but the registry for births and deaths refused. The Federal Court has also just dismissed the claim on appeal. The judges held that, “The fundamental rights of the transsexual individual are not violated by current genealogy legislation, which grants legal parental status based on the person’s previous gender and specific contribution to procreation”.
