In a forum published by the British daily newspaper The Independent, acclaimed physicists and computer scientists including Stephen Hawking, encourage vigilance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly advancing field of research with a great deal of potential tempered by numerous threats. According to scientists, it is high time that the scientific community considered the ethical implications of this subject.
They state that “The short-term incidence of AI [Artificial Intelligence] depends on who controls it but the long-term impact depends on the actual possibility of controlling it”. As far as scientists are concerned, science fiction novels are only as vivid as the readers’ imagination. Not enough studies are being carried out in the research field focusing primarily on autonomous weapons, intelligent machines and personal “assistants”.
