Florida: a law makes abortion illegal

Publié le : 16 June 2014

On Friday, 13 June, the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, signed a law making abortion illegal in this state at any point during the pregnancy from when the pregnant woman’s doctor considers that the fœtus can survive outside the womb. To date, current legislation bans abortion after the 24th week of pregnancy except in cases where the mother’s health is at risk.

The new legislation no longer exempts psychological disorders but states that abortion can be authorised in cases where the mother is at risk or to “prevent an irreversible physical deterioration in the mother’s vital organs“.

It was adopted by the Chamber by 70 votes to 45 and by the Senate with 24 votes to 15. It will come into force on 1 July 2014.

The Governor’s spokesperson, John Tupps, made the following announcement: “Governor Scott is a pro-life campaigner and was happy to sign this draft bill which protects children’s lives“.
