On 12 January, the regional oncology network, OncoPACA-Corse, announced the birth of the “first baby conceived following oocyte vitrification as part of anticancer treatment”.To date, “according to published data, only six children have been born in the world via this technique in the context of fertility preservation following cancer”.
Vitrification, “the ultrarapid freezing of oocytes”has been authorised in France since 2011 “for medical reasons, prior to a potentially sterilising treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy”. In Spain, this technique is authorised “for women who wish to have children later in life”.
