Euthanasia: World Medical Association resists pressure from the Canadians and Dutch

Publié le 26 Oct, 2018

The Canadian and Dutch medical associations, both advocates of euthanasia, have made fruitless attempts to change the World Medical Association’s stance on this subject. Their draft resolution in favour of euthanasia was withdrawn due to a lack of support during an annual WMA meeting.

On the contrary, various local associations have opposed euthanasia. For Brazil, “if doctors are prepared not only to treat but also to kill, the principles of medical ethics and the trust between a patient and their doctor will be adversely affected”. Medical associations in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China) and Israel as well as in Africa and Germany have all spoken out against euthanasia.
