On Thursday 10 October, the Socialist President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, "threatened to resign if members of his parliamentary majority attempted to decriminalise abortion as part of a penal code reform".
On the Ecuadorean television channel, Oromar, the President announced: “‘If these acts of betrayal and disloyalty go on and an ‘Alianza Pais’ majority is reached tomorrow [amongst current coalition MPs] to legalise abortion, ‘I will immediately tender my resignation’ ". He went on to add that, "they can do whatever they want […] I will never approve the decriminalisation of abortion. […] On the contrary, the Constitution pledges to defend life from the moment of conception".
