Computerised organs

 Professor James Feng (British Columbia, Canada) is in the process of developing microprocessors surrounded by cell membranes in an attempt to revolutionise the standard clinical trial process. This hybrid of living tissues and electronic chips could "cut the cost and length of clinical trials". This new technology is also deemed satisfactory for "ethical aspects".

Professor of Biological and Chemical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), James Feng dreams of conducting medical research and (drug-based) clinical trials on artificially developed organs. "The potential is huge". These experimentation modules would reproduce the human model more efficiently than current animal testing. Furthermore, the computerised organs "are a less controversial choice for modelling than [embryo] stem cells". In short: this process is less costly, gives better results and is ethically acceptable according to James Feng.

The work of the UBC in this domain is in its infancy. Professor James Feng is currently inviting scientists to workshops to be held at the UBC in July 2014.
