Committee on Disabilities: the prenatal selection of disabled babies is discriminatory

Publié le 6 Nov, 2017

In a General Comment originated from the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) concerning the principles of equality and non-discrimination, the UNO committee in charge of disabilities declared: “States parties should address stigmatization through modern forms of discrimination, such as a disability-selective antenatal screening policy that go against the recognition of the equal worth of every person.” (paragraph 44 of the General Comment).

This call from the Committee on the rights of Persons with Disabilities echoes another official document published by that same ONU Committee, condemning laws that authorize abortion for reasons of disability.

In the same vein, the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities blamed Great Britain for its “selective abortions based on fetal deficiency” [1].

A few months after the beginning of the citizen mobilizations Stop Discriminating DownDon’t Screen Us OutWe’re All Equal, the UNO is making a move towards true equality between people with and without disabilities.

[1] “Women’s rights to reproductive and sexual autonomy should be respected without legalizing selective abortion on the ground of fetal deficiency.”
