Autism: Embryo selection authorised in Western Australia

 The Western Australian Health Authorities have just sanctioned pre-implantation diagnosis as part of an in-vitro fertilisation cycle for couples at risk of giving birth to autistic children. Although there is no genetic test to diagnose autism, selection will be exclusively gender-based: boys are four times more likely to be autistic than girls. However, the use of this technique is controversial because numerous essentially environmental factors may be responsible for autism.
