Arkansas: abortion ban tightens from 20 to 18 weeks

Publié le 1 Avr, 2019

Asa Hutchinson, Governor of Arkansas, signed a bill on Friday banning abortion beyond 18 weeks of pregnancy (see Two pro-life legislative initiatives in the US). While lawmakers and the House of Representatives have already voted in favour of the bill, the Governor’s signature has the effect of signing it into law.

This new law lowers the threshold for banning abortion from 20 weeks to 18 weeks, though allowing exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or medical emergencies. It will come into effect 90 days after the formal adjournment of the current legislative session, which is expected to take place in May 2019.

Opponents have already announced that they plan to challenge the law in court.
