Anti-cancer treatments should not harm the foetus

Publié le 28 Sep, 2014

According to a Belgian study directed by Dr.Frédéric Aman at the Catholic University of Louvain, “the fear that the foetus might experience side effects cannot justify any delay in anti-cancer treatment, terminate a pregnancy or cause a child to be born prematurely“, when “treatments are administered after the first trimester“.

To carry out the study, Dr. F. Aman’s team examined 38 children whose mothers underwent chemotherapy during pregnancy, and compared the results with those recorded in 38 other children whose mothers did not have treatment. No differences were observed between the two groups in terms of mental or cardiac findings.

Consequently, another study involved monitoring children whose mothers had received radiotherapy during pregnancy. Normal behavioural and health results were recorded.
