Abortion: the right to conscientious objection discussed between Pope Francis and Barack Obama

 On Thursday 27 March in his first meeting with the United States President, Barack Obama, Pope Francis broached the subject of abortion and, more particularly, the "right to conscientious objection". The Holy See stressed that questions relating to the "right to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection" are "particularly important topics for the US Church". 

Following this meeting, the President of the United States "confirmed that he has promised the Vatican authorities that he will enter into ‘dialogue’ with the US Catholics regarding the application of his health insurance reform, which is a controversial issue because of certain provisions relating to contraception".
