Abortion: the “heartbeat bill” passed in Georgia

Publié le 15 Avr, 2019

On 30 March, Georgia lawmakers voted to ban abortion “as soon as a heartbeat is detected in the embryo “, as early as the sixth week of pregnancy. The measure allows exceptions in the event of medical complications, or if the mother’s life or health is in danger. “Georgia greatly values life. We stand up for the innocent and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves”, said Republican State Governor Brian Kemp, who is preparing to sign the bill into law.

A number of American actors, including Ben Stiller, Alec Baldwin, and Alyssa Milano, have said that they cannot continue to work in Georgia, a popular shooting destination, “in good conscience ”. Opponents denounce a text banning abortion “before the majority of women even know they are pregnant” and have threatened to challenge it in court.

In the U.S., each state is free to restrict or prohibit abortions, as long as the life or health of the mother is not in danger. Similar “heartbeat bills” have already been passed and blocked by judges in states like Kentucky and Iowa. On 20 March, Mississippi lawmakers adopted it as well.
