Abortion in free fall in Portugal

Publié le 8 Avr, 2019

According to a report published by the Portuguese health authorities, the number of abortions performed in the country fell by 25% between 2011 and 2017.

Abortion in Portugal was decriminalized in 2007.  The number of abortions initially increased every year until 2011, a record year. Since 2011, the decline has been constant, reaching the level of 15,000 abortions in 2017, “the lowest figure since the practice became legal”.

The average age of women who have an abortion is still 28. The drop in abortions is significant in all age groups, except among women aged over 40.
