The first uterus transplant carried out at the end of February in the United States, has failed. The complications which arose following transplantation “compelled the medical team to remove the organ”. The Cleveland Clinic made the following statement: “We regret to inform you that our patient, Lindsey, recently experienced sudden complications leading to the removal of the transplanted organ”. However the patient is “doing well” and “recovering”.
The 26 year-old patient was given the uterus of a 30 year-old deceased woman with the family’s consent. Even if the transplant had been successful, doctors would have waited a year before implanting an embryo.
No information has been released about the “sudden complications”. The doctors nevertheless indicated that the trial involving ten transplants would continue. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, which monitors the American transplantation system, two other hospitals have been given the green light to perform uterus transplants in Texas and Boston.
