American Bishops publish ethical guidelines for health personnel

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has just published the sixth edition of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services: Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

These revised directives, approved by majority decision during the Spring 2018 plenary meeting, set out to reaffirm the ethical standards of behaviour and provide guidance on moral issues facing health care today.

The new edition is enhanced by the update of a chapter on collaboration with "other agencies and health care providers" which proposes a framework and guidelines to be implemented in the case of agreements between Catholic and non-Catholic care establishments.

These directives are intended for, amongst others, "administrators, chaplains, doctors, health personnel and patients or residents" of Catholic health care institutions. They are also an educational tool for "students and faculty at Catholic medical schools, Catholic medical associations, Catholic hospitals and medical facilities" as well as all those involved in health care.
